In 2024, Lilah’s parents noticed something off about their daughter’s lingering cold symptoms. They followed their instincts and took her for bloodwork, but never imagined how serious the results would be: 16-month-old Lilah had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). She was transferred to BC Children’s Hospital the next day.
Lilah immediately began chemotherapy and initially responded well. But just as her family was preparing to take her home, Lilah developed a severe E. coli blood infection. Their hospital stay stretched into six difficult weeks that requiredexpertise from multiple departments—from oncology to infectious diseases, to plastic surgery and more. The ensuing surgery and aggressive treatment took a toll on Lilah’s small body.
“She couldn’t talk, eat, or walk. She was curled up, sedated most of the time,” recalled Holly, Lilah’s mom. “It was scary. She wasn’t herself.”
Throughout it all, the care team at BC Children’s became a lifeline. The donor-supported program Child Life brought moments of calm and connection, the nurses always took time to brighten Lilah’s day with bike rides and dances, and their social worker became Holly’s go-to for both emotional support and practical guidance. Her team made sure the family never felt alone, and always took the time to listen and explain.
Eventually, Lilah’s infection cleared. She was discharged just after Christmas and began the next phase of cancer treatment at home. These days, Lilah and her family make the trip to BC Children’s Hospital once every three months for check upsand ongoing chemotherapy and they manage the rest of her treatment with at-home therapy. Throughout this journey, Lilah’s spirits remain high. She and her brother even light up at the mention of the hospital—a testament to how experts and donors have helped create a safe, welcoming environment for kids.
